Johnny Depp presented guitar icon Keith Richards with the “Rock Immortal” award at the Scream 2009 Awards ceremony Saturday in Los Angeles.

The actor, who based his famous “Pirates of the Caribbean” character Jack Sparrow on the Rolling Stones legend, made a special appearance at the Spike TV awards show to present the award, according to the Associated Press. After Richards received the stake-shaped trophy, he said. “I liked the living legend, that was all right, but immortal is even better.”

Dozens of A-list celebrities — including Harrison Ford, Jessica Alba, Kate Bosworth, and Christina Ricci — attended the event, which honors the top sci-fi, horror, fantasy and comic-inspired movies and TV shows. All awards are determined by fans’ votes, and many attend the award show dressed as their favorite characters. The Ultimate Scream award went to J.J. Abrams’ remake of “Star Trek,” but the original Capt. Kirk, William Shatner, got laughs by going on stage to accept the trophy. “J.J., I’ll handle this,” Shatner said. “This movie was big. Imagine how big it could have been with me in it? … I’ll be waiting for your call.”
