The Doors will be celebrated on an upcoming American Masters on PBS.

“When You’re Strange” is the first feature documentary on The Doors, May 12.  Johnny Depp narrates this biopic on The Doors, one of the world’s most influential bands.

Johnny Depp has received the seal of approval from former members of The Doors for his role in a new film about the legendary rock group.

The Hollywood star narrates When You’re Strange: A Film About The Doors and reads the late singer Jim Morrison’s poetry in the feature-length documentary.

Drummer John Densmore said of the Pirates Of The Caribbean star: “He just got it, he is an icon, he understands Jim.”

Guitarist Robby Krieger, who wrote the chart-topping hit Light My Fire at the age of 18, added: “He has got this great voice and it sounds like he really cares about what he is saying.”

He said: “We tried a few other guys before Johnny Depp. It just didn’t work. But this was right on. I heard later that he was a big Doors fan. I said ‘That’s why he did so good.’”

The forthcoming film features never-before-seen footage of Jim, who died in 1971, from an experimental film called HWY (Highway).

Keyboardist Ray Manzarek said of watching the footage: “Jim is alive again. It was fabulous. It’s like he is not gone. There he is, man. he is right up on the screen.” [Source]

Tickets go on sale Friday for the rock documentary When You’re Strange: A Film About The Doors, which will be screened April 15 across Canada.

The movie, directed by indie filmmaker Tom DiCillo and narrated by Johnny Depp, uses historic and previously unseen footage to tell the history of the revolutionary band, led by legendary singer, Jim Morrison.

“As a rock ‘n’ roll documentary, or any kind of documentary, for that matter, it simply doesn’t get any better than this,” Depp said in a statement. “What an honour to have been involved. I am as proud of this as anything I have ever done.”

Advance tickets are available beginning April 9 online at www.cineplex.com/events, as well as at participating theatre box offices. The movie will be released on DVD and Blu-ray on June 29, and a soundtrack will be released April 6.

The film will be shown at selected Cineplex theatres on April 15 at 7 p.m., with an encore presentation at some locations on Saturday, April 17 at 1 p.m. [Source]
