Johnny Depp is reportedly going to play Frank Sinatra in a biopic about the legendary singer. Martin Scorcese will direct, and rather than going with his normal choice for leading man, Leonardo DiCaprio, he wants Johnny.Sources say Universal is thrilled with Depp’s performance in the upcoming movie Public Enemies, and “very much wants to stay in the Johnny Depp business.”Sounds like a role he can’t refuse! And plus, Johnny won’t even have to go to vocal training, since they’ll be using Sinatra’s own recordings for the film. Sinatra Enterprises made sure of that! This would be the first partnering between Depp and Scorcese. Do you think Johnny could pull off playing “Ole Blue Eyes?” [Source]

Will Johnny Depp doobie-doobie-do Frank Sinatra in Scorsese’s biopic?
May 15 2009
Posted by Staff // Categories: News and rumors

Director Martin Scorsese is making an authorized biopic about Frank Sinatra. And according to Deadline Hollywood’s Nikki Finke, Universal’s first choice for the role might be Johnny Depp, not Marty’s usual guy, Leonardo DiCaprio. Her sources tell her that the studio is thrilled with his performance in this summer’s forthcoming “Public Enemies” and “very much wants to stay in the Johnny Depp business.”Depp certainly looks comfortable in period suits and natty fedoras. And he has already proven in “Sweeney Todd” that he can carry a tune. But Finke says the movie will use Sinatra’s own recordings, thanks to a deal with Frank Sinatra Enterprises, with involvement of the Sinatra estate and Warner Music Group. Besides, Scorsese and Depp have been strangers in the night for a long time and have never worked together. So it would be an interesting combo. This could be a nice change of pace

Johnny Depp in contention for lead in Martin Scorsese’s Sinatra biopic?
May 15 2009

Universal, the studio behind Martin Scorsese’s recently announced Frank Sinatra biopic, has put Johnny Depp at the top of its wish list of actors to play Ol’ Blue Eyes, according to Deadline Hollywood Daily. Scorsese had reportedly been eyeing longtime collaborator Leonardo DiCaprio (Gangs of New York, The Aviator, The Departed) for the lead role. But now that the Universal-produced period-heist picture Public Enemies, starring Depp and Christian Bale, looks like a potential winner, the studio is eager to line up Depp’s next high-profile project. Universal would neither confirm or deny the report; and Depp’s rep says it’s untrue. [Source]
