Burton and Depp Begin Shooting Dark Shadows In January

Johnny Depp and Tim Burton are pretty much a match made in–well I was going to say “heaven,” but that might not be the right word. It’s not hell either, but rather some weird and dark place in between with lots of hairspray and makeup. They’re teaming up on their eighth movie together and according to Deadline it will begin shooting this January. The movie is Dark Shadows and is based on the 1960’s serial television show of the same name.

The Dark Shadows movie has been on the table for a couple of years now and the premise is right up the Burton/Depp creepy alley. The original 1960s-70s television series had a gothic feel with a number of different monsters making appearances, a relative first for daytime television. Six months into the series the vampire character Barnabas Collins (Jonathan Frid) showed up and helped to boost ratings. Depp will reprise the role of Collins in the movie remake which, if it stays true to the television series, will feature an assortment of zombies, werewolves, ghosts and witches.

Depp and Burton last teamed up on Alice in Wonderland. Depp is currently filming the next Pirates of the Caribbean installment while Burton is in pre-production on Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. Seth Grahame-Smith wrote the novel and screenplay for the latter and is lined up as writer for Dark Shadows.  [Source]

News and rumors

In the next “Pirates of the Caribbean,” Johnny Depp’s seafaring character Jack Sparrow will face a woman from his past and board another buccaneer’s ship, the studio behind the film said on Monday.

The Walt Disney Co revealed those story elements for the new film as it announced that production has started.

“Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” is the fourth movie in the franchise, which to date has earned more than $1 billion at U.S. and Canada box offices. It will hit theaters in 3-D on May 20, 2011.

In the movie, Depp’s popular Sparrow character will run into a woman from his past, played by Oscar winner Penelope Cruz, Disney said. She will force Sparrow onto the Queen Anne’s Revenge, the legendary pirate ship run by Blackbeard, who will be played by Ian McShane.

Once on-board, Sparrow will need to keep an eye out on both Blackbeard and Cruz’s character.

Both McShane and Cruz are new cast members on the latest “Pirates” movie, taking the place of head-liners Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley.

Bloom, among other things, has a wedding on his agenda. On Monday, his representatives told celebrity news outlets the 33 year-old actor is engaged to Victoria’s Secret model Miranda Kerr. [Source]

‘Pirates Of The Caribbean 4′ To Shoot In 3-D

Johnny Depp’s fourth open-water adventure, ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,’ will be shot in Disney Digital 3-D.

Captain Jack Sparrow might have to learn a new seafaring ditty that goes a little something like, “Yo-ho-ho, a bottle of rum and a pair of your finest 3-D glasses.” Yes, Johnny Depp’s fourth open-water adventure, “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” will be shot in Disney Digital 3-D, the studio has announced.

That brings the total number of 3-D releases in the next two years to, oh, approximately 6,000 (not really, though it certainly feels that way). The noteworthy development for “Pirates,” then, is not that it will hit theaters as a 3-D movie but that it will be shot in three-dimensions rather than converted during post-production.

The 3-D conversion process has become one of the more controversial trends in Hollywood. Converted films, like “Alice in Wonderland” or “Clash of the Titans,” can have a sort of pop-up picture-book effect that is more jarring than it is an effective visual and storytelling addition. That hasn’t stopped other big-budget films shot with 2-D cameras from jumping on the 3-D conversion bandwagon and the premium ticket prices that can be sold as a result. Upcoming converted films include “Piranha 3-D,” “The Last Airbender,” “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” and “The Green Hornet.”   Read full article.

Hollywood star Johnny Depp and his partner, the French actress and singer Vanessa Paradis, stepped out at the Cannes film festival for a surprise concert by punk rocker Patti Smith.

Paradis rubbed shoulders with fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld and film-maker Tim Burton at a dinner held in her honour near the waterfront festival hall on Tuesday night.

Depp and Paradis are not appearing in films screened at the festival, which draws dozens of world celebrities to the Riviera town for two weeks each May. [Source]
